How smoke moves through a Bronx walk-up

Most of the Bronx is dense multifamily housing, a lot of it prewar or tenement-era construction with narrow stairwells, shared party walls, and light-and-air shafts running up the back of the building. None of that was built with fire containment in mind, and it shows the moment smoke has somewhere to travel. Here is where the damage actually turns up:

Cleanup is our job, rebuilding is someone else's

We do the part that happens right after the fire department leaves: soot and smoke cleanup, odor removal, pulling and drying the water, cleaning belongings that can be saved, and getting a board-up on windows or doors so the unit is not sitting open. We do not rebuild. Once a unit is clean, dry, and documented, hanging new drywall, repainting, or replacing kitchen cabinets is a separate job that belongs to the landlord's contractor or a general contractor the tenant hires. We are direct about where our part ends, because in a building with rent-stabilized units, that handoff between us and whoever rebuilds usually needs to happen without a gap.
